Dr. Anthony R. Tersigni serves as President and CEO of Ascension, a Catholic healthcare organization dedicated to the transformation of healthcare through excellent clinical care throughout the continuum and through innovation. Its subsidiaries include Ascension Health, the United States’ largest Catholic and nonprofit health system. Ascension Health provides the highest quality care to all with special attention to those who are poor and vulnerable. Last year Ascension Health provided $1.5 billion in care of persons living in poverty and community benefit programs. Its Mission-focused Health Ministries employ 155,000 associates serving in more than 1,900 locations in 23 states and the District of Columbia. Other Ascension subsidiaries focus on service areas ranging from biomedical engineering to treasury management functions to resource and supply management to venture capital investing.
Before becoming the first President and CEO of Ascension, Dr. Tersigni had served as President and CEO of Ascension Health since June 17, 2004. Previously he served as Ascension Health’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer from January 2001 through December 2003. He was interim CEO for the System beginning in January 2004. From 1995 to 2000, Dr. Tersigni was President and Chief Executive Officer at St. John Health (now St. John Providence Health System), Detroit, Mich., Ascension Health’s largest integrated health system. He also served the St. John Health system as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer from 1994 to 1995.
Since 1985, Dr. Tersigni has been a Clinical Professor of Health and Behavioral Sciences at Oakland University, Rochester, Mich.
Dr. Tersigni has served as a board member of numerous professional organizations. He is the Chair elect for the St. Louis Regional Business Council. He is past Chair and currently serves on the board of the Healthcare Leadership Council. He is a board member of the National Catholic Bioethics Center, the Catholic University of America, and the St. Louis Regional Chamber. He is a former board member of the Detroit Economic Club, the United Way of Greater St. Louis and board member and past Chair of the Catholic Health Association of the United States. He is a member of the Coalition to Protect America’s Health Care and was elected President of the International Committee of Catholic Health Care Institutions, a Committee of the Pontifical Council for Health Care Workers.
Dr. Tersigni was listed as one of Modern Healthcare’s “100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare” for the years 2006 through 2013. He is the recipient of many professional awards including the 2004 Senior-Level Healthcare Executive Regent’s Award from the American College of Healthcare Executives for his contributions toward the advancement of healthcare management. Dr. Tersigni was awarded the 2012 Meritorious Service Award from the Michigan Health & Hospital Association, and named a St. Louis Business Journal 2010 Health Care Hero for Public Policy. He was named Crain’s Detroit Business Newsmaker of the Year in 2000.
