Daughters of Charity Medical Access Voucher System

Organization / Location: Daughters of Charity, Nairobi, Kenya
Contact: Sr. Deborah Mallott, DC Social Worker, 254.020-890090
In Nairobi, the Daughters of Charity provide basic outpatient healthcare in the form of a mobile medical clinic which operates two days per week, with staff members going to patients’ homes for follow-up the remaining days of the week. The Center also offers comprehensive outpatient care for persons who are HIV positive or who have AIDS. There is no provision for patients who require hospitalization except this prepaid voucher system established by the Daughters of Charity. The Daughters of Charity pay an amount each month and the cost of the test or admission is deducted from the account when patients with vouchers use the services, eliminating the need to directly give the money to the patient. This allows people who would normally be denied in both public and mission hospitals because they are unable to pay to receive the treatment they need.
