Sister Mary Joan Walsh, CSJ, is a member of the Ascension Health Board of Trustees.
Sister Mary Joan earned a bachelor's degree from Nazareth College, Nazareth, Mich., in 1969, and a master's degree in religious studies from Aquinas College, Grand Rapids, Mich., in 1978.
From 1955 to 1972, Sister Mary Joan held various teaching positions in Michigan, and from 1972 to 1979, she was Director of Religious Education. Next, she joined the Sisters of St. Joseph Business Office in Nazareth, Mich., where she was employed from 1979 to 1983. Sister Mary Joan continued to serve the congregation as Director of Facilities and Personnel and then as a member of the administrative team at the Motherhouse until her departure in 1987. From 1988 to 1989, she served as Residential Manager, Baraga Manor Subsidized Housing for the Elderly, Otsego, Mich. She returned to congregational ministry as a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph Leadership Team in 1989, where she remained until 1995. In the fall of that year, Sister Mary Joan joined Borgess Health Alliance, Kalamazoo, Mich., as Corporate Ombudsman and, in 1997, accepted the position of Vice President of Sponsorship. She retired from that position in June 2007. She was a member of the Daughters of Charity National Health System and Sisters of St. Joseph Health System Steering Committee from 1998 to 1999, and has remained a board member ever since.
Sister Mary Joan also has extensive governance experience. She is currently serving on the Board of the Northside Economic Potential Group, Kalamazoo, Mich., and has served on several boards, including: Kalamazoo Youth Ministry; Hospice of Greater Kalamazoo; Plainwell Ambulance; Pipp Community Hospital; Tawas St. Joseph Hospital; Lee Memorial Hospital; Genesys Health System; Senior Services, Inc. and the Disability Resource Center.
